Make it step by step
- Step 01
Knead the clay evenly, adding water sparingly. Form a ball on the board.
- Step 02
Press a thumb into the centre while leaving a bottom. Pinch the walls gradually as you rotate; do not simply pull up the rim.
- Step 03
Aim for similar base and wall thickness, around 5–8 mm for a small sample. Smooth with a damp sponge without soaking it.
- Step 04
Dry in shade with airflow, loosely covered initially. Open gradually and inspect daily. Full drying may take several days.
Check before use
No thin holes, a stable base and a record of cracks after drying.
Limits of this project
Air-dried clay is not fired ceramic: not waterproof, food-safe or suitable for drinks. No campfire firing is taught here.
Take down and restore
Reclaim compatible clay scraps; wet-wipe the work area rather than sweeping dry dust.
All lashings and racks here are for light objects, never people, climbing or rescue.
