Make it step by step
- Step 01
Secure the stick on a work support. Choose a comfortable handle and keep hands out of the blade path.
- Step 02
Shape a short, flat wedge with rounded edges. Do not create a needle point or fire-harden it.
- Step 03
Secure the soil tray. Press shallowly and move small amounts at a time. Never stand on the handle or lever rocks with it.
- Step 04
Compare dry and slightly damp soil. Photograph the shallow test hole and inspect tip wear before refilling.
Check before use
The handle is sound, the hand does not slip and the tray contains no sharp debris.
Limits of this project
This is not permission to dig in forests. Avoid roots, utilities, banks and archaeological sites.
Take down and restore
Refill the tray and pack out tools and wood shavings.
All lashings and racks here are for light objects, never people, climbing or rescue.
