Make it step by step

  1. Step 01

Inspect for droppings, chemical residues or flaking coatings. Choose a clear spot away from dead overhead branches and paths.

  2. Step 02

Slope the tarp towards one low corner without pooling. Keep the corner above the container rather than submerged.

  3. Step 03

Let initial runoff bypass the storage container, then move it underneath. This removes some debris but does not disinfect water.

  4. Step 04

Cover and label after collection. Keep entirely separate from safe water supplies and avoid storage that allows mosquito breeding.

Check before use

No pooling or overflow, and the container is clearly distinct from drinking water.

Limits of this project

Rainwater can contain germs and chemicals. Ordinary tarps are not certified drinking-water catchments; boiling does not remove all chemicals.

Take down and restore

Dispose of leftovers as permitted and dry the tarp and container.

Practise in an area where building activities are permitted. Bring materials or obtain permission to collect them. Do not cut living trees or dig tent trenches. Take projects apart afterwards.
All lashings and racks here are for light objects, never people, climbing or rescue.
