Make it step by step

  1. Step 01

Cross the poles at right angles. Tie a clove hitch on the upright just below the crossing, close to the crosspiece.

  2. Step 02

Take the cord across the front of the crosspiece and behind the upright. Make three complete wrapping turns, laid neatly alongside each other.

Step 2: Take the cord across the front of the crosspiece and behind the upright. Make three complete wrapping turns, laid neatly alongside each other.2
  3. Step 03

Pass cord between the poles to make two or three tight frapping turns around the wraps. Pull each snug without cutting your hands.

Step 3: Pass cord between the poles to make two or three tight frapping turns around the wraps. Pull each snug without cutting your hands.3
  4. Step 04

Finish with a clove hitch on the crosspiece. Dress and gently test rotation. Rebuild a joint that moves easily.

Step 4: Finish with a clove hitch on the crosspiece. Dress and gently test rotation. Rebuild a joint that moves easily.4

Check before use

Neat wraps are compressed by the frapping turns and the joint resists a light movement test.

Limits of this project

No load rating is provided. Rot, slippery cord and wet/dry changes affect holding power.

Take down and restore

Undo the finishing hitch before unwrapping; avoid leaving cut cord fragments.

Practise in an area where building activities are permitted. Bring materials or obtain permission to collect them. Do not cut living trees or dig tent trenches. Take projects apart afterwards.
All lashings and racks here are for light objects, never people, climbing or rescue.
