Make it step by step

  1. Step 01

Select straight wood without rot or cracks. Flex gently to inspect it. Work on a stable support with everyone outside the knife's reach.

  2. Step 02

Carve a short taper, cutting away from your body. Make a shallow cord notch near the head; a deep notch would weaken the peg.

  3. Step 03

Drive it with a wooden mallet, leaning the head slightly away from the pull. Leave little exposed shaft. Stop at roots or stones rather than forcing it.

Step 3: Drive it with a wooden mallet, leaning the head slightly away from the pull. Leave little exposed shaft. Stop at roots or stones rather than forcing it.3
  4. Step 04

Attach the cord close to ground level. Pull gradually in the intended direction. If the peg moves or cracks, use another position or a manufactured stake.

Step 4: Attach the cord close to ground level. Pull gradually in the intended direction. If the peg moves or cracks, use another position or a manufactured stake.4

Check before use

The cord stays below the head, the peg resists a gentle pull and no splinters cut the cord.

Limits of this project

Not suitable for loose sand, waterlogged soil or strong wind. Not load-rated; never use for a hammock or climbing.

Take down and restore

Release the cord, remove the peg, close its small hole as permitted and pack out carved wood.

Practise in an area where building activities are permitted. Bring materials or obtain permission to collect them. Do not cut living trees or dig tent trenches. Take projects apart afterwards.
All lashings and racks here are for light objects, never people, climbing or rescue.
